Fangirl moments top 10 of 2011: 4. National Theatre’s production of Frankenstein

The cinema near my parents started to show the livestreams from the National Theatre in the 2010-2011 season. The first stream I saw was Fela! and I saw most that followed. The one production that really stood out was Frankenstein. You know, the one with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Obviously my interest was increased because of Benedict. I can still remember sitting in the cinema after King Lear ended with the biggest silly grin on my face because the host said his name. I was so glad it was dark at the time!
As you probably know, the play was broadcast twice because Benedict and Jonny alternated the roles of Dr. Frankenstein and Creature on a daily basis. The first I saw with my mum and I’m proud to remark that she thought Benedict was great as Creature. She has never been patient enough to make it through one Sherlock episode (I blame Blind Banker for that, since that was her first one) so she didn’t know what kind of actor he was. I won’t re-review the play here, since I already did that in March but it left quite an impression on me.
The second broadcast was maybe even more amazing because of the company I was keeping then. No other than the lovely Miss Clio (all the way from Greece to see this particular broadcast! It’s still unreal that we already met!), the lovely Miss Sara, the lovely Miss Annemarie and her lovely sister Louise. All crazy Benedict fans (no, I will not use that word, I strongly dislike that word so just no!) so it was a fangirl frenzy! Especially since he played Dr. Frankenstein this time and we got to admire the beautiful outfits and his beautiful hair! It was just one of those perfect nights!

Frankenstein fans - listen and weep with nostalgia.

I’m not sure why I’m even admitting this but I just screwed my eyes shut and tried so hard to remember every tiny detail in my head and when I opened my eyes at the end of the heartbeat A TEAR ROLLED DOWN MY FACE.

What’s happened to my life?!

I am so close to tears now.

I miss this show so damn much.

Brb, off to my TARDIS.

GUYS! GUESS WHAT JUST ARRIVED IN THE MAIL! I had already almost given up hope, because I ordered it 6 weeks ago and it still didn’t arrive. I even sent an e-mail to the sale-department of Underworld and I got a reply back that I had to wait until upcoming Monday because of all the bank holidays the UK had the last weeks. If I hadn’t received it by then, they would send a new copy. BUT I HAVE IT NOW! BASICALLY ON THE LAST DAY POSSIBLE BEFORE I WOULD SEND ANOTHER E-MAIL!

Not even the annoying huge fly that’s whizzing around my ear can bug me now!

“What does it feel like to be in love?”

“It feels as though all the happiness in the world is bubbling up out of my throat, and my insides are on fire; my heart is a hammer, and it feels as though I can do anything — I can do anything!
That is what love feels like.”
—-
“Is this how I was born? Stolen from the night and robbed from the Earth? Made of meat for the dogs? Even I can feel disgust.”
—-
[Benedict’s Creature and Old Man De Lacey:]
‎”Is the moon out?”
“Yes.”
“Describe it for me.”
“Solemn.”
“Solemn. That is a good word.”
“And sad. Like me.”
“Sad? Why are you sad?”
“Because I am lonely.”

[Alt. Johnny’s Creature and Old Man De Lacey:]
“Is the moon out?”
“Yes, it is right there.”
“Describe it to me.”
“Solitary.”
“That is a good word.”
“And sad, like me.”
“Why are you sad?”
“Because I am solitary.”
—-
”You are a murderer!” - “If I am, it is you who created me.”
—-
“If you had a child like me, would you abandon it?”
“I would never abandon a child.”
“Even if he looked like this?”
“Never.”
—-
“What is your name?”
“A name? Ha! What luxury! He did not give me a name.”
—-
“If you wanted to create life, you could have given me a child. No, Victor; you did it out of pride.”
—-
“I will be Adam, she will be Eve! And all the memory of Hell will melt like snow!”
—-
“Why did you make me?”
“To prove that I could.”
—-
“We can only go forward. We can never go back.”
—-
“All I ask is the possibility of love.”
—-
“You give me purpose. You, I desire. Go on. Walk on. You must be destroyed.”
—-
“I don’t know what love is.”
“I’ll teach you!”
—-
“Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me alone, Master. What is death? What will it feel like? Can I die? Frankenstein forgive me, my cruelty, please forgive me. All I wanted was your love, I would have loved you with all my heart. My poor creator.”
—-
“My mind is superb!”
—-
“Come Scientist, destroy me!”
—-
“He lives to destroy me; I live to lead him on.”

CREATURE: This the seat that we must change for Heaven? This mournful gloom for that celestial light?
VICTOR: That’s Paradise Lost! You’ve read Paradise Lost?
CREATURE: I liked it.
VICTOR: Why? You saw yourself as Adam?
CREATURE: I should be Adam. God was proud of Adam. But Satan’s the one I sympathize with. For I was cast out, like Satan, though I did no wrong. And when I see others content, I feel the bile rise in my throat, and it tastes like Satan’s bile…”
